Vocabulary Flash Cards

Vocabulary flash cards are used in preschool for young children in order to actively teach them new words and engage their young brains but just because it is used with children does not and should not be taken as an indication of their quality. Indeed, flash cards are an academic tool which is relied upon by educators and students alike, and they enjoy such a strong and loyal following because they are an effective and manageable way of introducing complex and demanding academic topics and issues.

Vocabulary flash cards are ideal for concentrating the mind on a particular word, and the fact that the learning is done on a small, scaled down level rather than a protracted learning session means that for those of us whose attention span begins to wane after 15 minutes or so will be able to maximize our learning progress.

Like all great inventions, vocabulary flash cards are elegant in their power, and simplicity, and are simply a piece of paper or card with the English word on one side of the card (both the definition and pronunciation), and the word as it is used in your own, native language. The student then simply swaps the card around to see the definition and meaning of the word and if you are feeling especially productive you can always find a picture of a particular word and place it on the card so that you have a visual aid as well.

People get quite polarized in terms of the relative effectiveness of the vocabulary flash cards, with some regarding them as incredibly useful and help learning aids, whilst the critics contend that they require a disproportionate amount of work and effort in order to net the student any results. A counter argument to such criticism is that the level of input required by the student will mean that the student is actively learning, rather than merely passively reading the theory, they are putting the word into actual usage.

A major benefit of the flash cards is that they are extremely portable, thanks to their small size and negligible weight they can comfortably fit into the pocket of the student and then be carried around and studied at the students convenience and leisure. What this means is that the learning routine is always maximized, so even if you are standing in the queue at the movie theatre or the mall, you can simply pluck out your cards and kill some time by revising your English vocabulary!
