Increase Your Vocabulary: how to use your friend the internet effectively
Whether you are learning English as a second language, or are looking to improve and increase your vocabulary, using the internet is an excellent way of achieving great results in a short period of time, as you can have access to a variety of different writing styles. Different sectors of society will rely upon different types and variations of English, and so you will expect to come across more formal writing and prose within academic and journalistic texts.
If you find that you are perhaps struggling to remember and retain the meaning, pronunciation and or spelling of all the new words that you are steadily picking up, then you may want to make use of one of the many different types of memory aids and memory tricks that are available such as acronyms. One of the most effective ways to remember the meaning of words, and thereby increase your vocabulary is to make use of mnemonics.
Mnemonics are typically verbal, and one of the most common ways that they are used is that each letter of a word is taken and used to create a story or poem. Because the letters are used to create a linear structure (be it a story or poem or song) this makes it far easier for the brain to remember the information as well as to recall it. The more ridiculous the mnemonics, the better because if the mnemonic in question can help stir up a mental picture, then this help further help the student recall and recant the information from their minds.
The thing about improving and developing your knowledge of English vocabulary is that, in much the same way as body builders are able to handle progressively higher levels of weights and pressure, so to will your mind become more attuned and accustomed to bigger and longer words. As your vocabulary increases you will find that reading texts and articles that were once upon a time challenging for you become steadily easier. Why? Because of the context of the word. Words are not static entities which sit on the page, in their respective part of the sentence without any sort of relationship to the rest of the other words, but are mutually dependable upon one other, much in the same way as a jigsaw.
One of the most important factors (and by extension overlooked) involved in the development of your vocabulary learning is the level of confidence that you possess. By exposing yourself to new words each and every day, you will slowly but surely become accustomed to more challenging texts and as a result, you will be able to retain and take in more information.
