How to Improve Your Spelling

Learning is a very subjective and personal thing, which means that different people learn at different rates, and learn most effectively by using different methods. For some, the phonetic spelling of the word in question works wonders, for others, this method fails to sink in at all. Students who are attempting to learn English as a 2nd language are placed in a rather unenviable position, as whilst most educational institutions will try to teach the spelling of English words using the phonetic method, this is a rather ineffective way of learning the spelling of words.

The reason for this is that English is a language which has many words which are pronounced in a much different manner than from the way they are spelt. The hapless student, having never came across these words in English before will invariably have a difficult time trying to reconcile in their own mind that sometimes the collection of letters are said in a different manner to the way they are spelt. Even we native English speakers struggle from time to time to come to grips with this unusual facet of our language. Words such as queue, psalms, gnarly are all words that have something in common: silent letters.

Unfortunately, regardless of what you do in life, your spelling is often (unfairly some would say) used as a means of measuring your worth. Poor spelling can make all the difference in employment, and in a professional setting can be devastating as it detracts from your underlying message. That said, there are a number of effective ways as to how to improve your spelling, and these methods primarily focus around the proper identification and usage of patterns.

In the English language, another potential obstacle to the would be student is not only the words with silent letters but words which have a very similar or even the same pronunciation but which have different meanings. Learning the distinction and proper usage of the variations, based on the context of the sentence is a vital skill and one that will be most useful for the effective development of your English learning process.  Be particularly alert for the likes of words such as their/there, where their is used to describe the possession by a person, whilst there is used to denote the location of a noun.

Where as the their/there is double triple, its triple the potential for failure with the bothersome to/too/two group. To is used in the context of distance towards something, two is used as unit of measurement and finally, too is used to describe an adjective such as “too hot” “too sweet.” By becoming more aware of the differences you will be able to more quickly grasp the English language.
